Harm Of Wisdom Tooth

Published on:2017-12-6

When will the wisdom teeth erupt? Wisdom tooth is called the third molar of human, generally starting to erupt after the age of 18, namely in adulthood. Most wisdom teeth, except for a small amount of that erupting fully in a desired position, will do harm to the owners. What harm will it do?

As food for human becomes increasingly exquisite, our gum will degenerate into a shorter one correspondingly. There isn’t enough room for growth of wisdom tooth, causing it a deflective or horizontal growth. That’s why most wisdom teeth bring various dental problems. Various common harm are shown as follow.

1. Dental caries

Because of the backmost position of wisdom teeth, chances are that they are hard to be cleaned thoroughly by daily oral cleaning. Food is quite easy to be trapped there, while toothbrush is quite hard to reach there, making wisdom teeth more susceptible to dental caries. Especially for those with a deflective eruption, a thorough cleaning will be more difficult to obtain.

2. Pericoronitis of wisdom tooth

Mostly, pericoronitis occurs when there is an impacted wisdom tooth which erupts partially. Part of it is wrapped by gum, leading to the formation of a gingival pocket between tooth crown and gum. The pocket turns out to be an ideal harbour for food debris and bacterial growth, causing gingivitis and eventually pericoronitis. It is usually called acute pericoronitis of wisdom tooth because acute inflammation is more common to see.

3. Teeth misalignment

As mentioned before, wisdom tooth erupted under the circumstance that human gum grows shorter. Without enough room for growth, the eruption of wisdom tooth will press the second molar next to it. So the second molar is prone to dental caries. Moreover, during the eruption of wisdom tooth, it will apply an outward force on the second molar constantly. As a result, there will be protrusion and deflection of the anterior teeth on the same side of the wisdom tooth, causing a misalignment.

4. Canker sores

Canker sores take place more frequently during the eruption of wisdom teeth. And a partial erupted wisdom tooth is also a common cause for that. During its eruption, it is easy to trigger red, swollen and aching gums. With the emergence of inflammation, it turns into canker sores at last. As for a partially erupted wisdom tooth, there comes the existence of gingival pocket which is susceptible to inflammation and ulceration.

What is mentioned above is the common harm that may caused by a wisdom tooth. According to the dentists from AKJ Dental, it’d better to conduct an extraction on wisdom teeth with a malposition. The sooner, the better.
