The Risks of Dental Implant

Dental implants have transformed tooth replacement since their introduction over thirty years ago. Because of their durability, dental implants have a high success rate, well over 95%. However, like any surgery, dental implant surgery poses some health risks though problems are rare.


1.Infection.

Dental implant is an oral surgical treatment and it is strict with the dentist skills and instruments. If the dentist and instruments are not properly sterilized, it is easily cause infection. The patient should go to a professional dental hospital to treat the infection as soon as it happens.


2.Lower lip numbness. 

There are some nerves underneath the alveolar bone named inferior alveolar nerve. When osteotomy is operated, the dentist should be very careful not to injure the nerves. If the implant is placed in the front side of the nerve or just placed on the nerve, patient will feel lower lip numbness. To solve this problem, the implant should be removed and replace in another position.


3.Incision dehiscence.

Incision is stitched too loose or too tight leads to dehiscent possibility. When the oral hygiene is poor, it has large rate to have infection which easily leads incision dehiscence. The solution for this matter is to clean the incision and re-stitched it as soon as possible. 


4.Excessive bleeding.

Though dental implant is a minimally invasive surgery, it might cause local bleeding when the implant screw is placed into the tissue and forms blood clot. This situation is frequently seen and can be treated cold compress in the early stage. There is another bleeding condition need to be caution. If the dentist is not skillful and experienced, periodontium will be injured, causing mucosa or subcutaneous hemorrhage.


5.Gingival hyperplasia.

This is the complication caused by the implant root placing improper and poor connection between the implant root and the bridge. These will cause the poor hygiene and chronic inflammation, resulting gingival hyperplasia.


Although it’s impossible to eliminate all risk, your chances of implant success can be improved by choosing a professional dental hospital and treated by an experienced dentist.
