What are the Symptoms of Periodontitis?

Published on:2017-9-20

Periodontitis is also identified as Gum Disease and is a very common condition in which the gums and deeper periodontal structures become inflamed. Periodontitis is caused by certain bacteria and by the local inflammation triggered by those bacteria. Although these periodontal bacteria are naturally present in the mouth, they are only harmful when the conditions are right for them to increase dramatically in numbers. This happens when a layer of bacteria and food debris, known as plaque, builds up and is left undisturbed on the teeth, commonly in hard-to-reach areas such as between the teeth.

What are the symptoms of periodontitis?

. Redness and swelling of the gum, increased bleeding from the gums are symptoms of periodontitis which may be provoked by brushing or eating, or even be spontaneous.

Ⅱ. Dry mouth and sticky saliva

Ⅲ. Periodontal pocket forms and thus inflammation appears around the periodontal pocket, which are caused by food residue deposits.

Ⅳ. Alveolar resorption and loose teeth are caused by periodontitis, which are the primary causes of adult tooth loss.

Reasons of periodontitis:

Bad oral hygiene

Failing to brush the teeth and rinse the mouth properly causes bacteria accumulation and dental calculus and thus results in periodontitis.

Unhealthy Chewing manners

Lots of people are used to chewing on one side or frequently chew hard food, which may cause teeth damage and food stuck and thus result in the periodontitis.

Smoking

Smokers are significantly more likely to develop periodontitis than non-smokers. The substances in tobacco cause great damage to the teeth.

Traumatic occlusion

In the process of occlusion, if the biting force is too large and go beyond the force that periodontal tissues bear, traumatic occlusion will occur. Bruxism also falls into this category.
