Longevity of Porcelain Tooth

Published on:2018-1-12

In general, a porcelain tooth can be used for about 10 years. Some won’t work any more only after being used for one or two years, while others can stilled be used after more than 10 years. Why? According to the dentists from AKJ Dental, there will be a big change in the speed of gum absorption every 10 years, causing the exposure of tooth root. The marginal adaptation of the porcelain tooth gets worse, requiring a replacement in order to keep the natural tooth from being corroded by bacteria. As for those with a service life of mere one or two years, it may become fractured because of inappropriate use, or its abutment is corroded due to gum absorption.

What are the factors that influence the longevity of porcelain tooth?

1. Fractured porcelain

Without doubt, the resistance to pressure of a porcelain tooth is weaker than that of a natural one. Such behaviors as biting walnut and pine nut will lead to fractured porcelain. Besides, if the inner crown is too thin or has subfissure, it will be more susceptible to fractured porcelain after wearing it on as well.

2. Poor marginal adaptation

As for those porcelain teeth with a poor marginal adaptation, they serve no function of protecting a natural one. On contrary, food debris will be trapped inside them, causing a faster corrosion of natural teeth. If the natural tooth is a devital one, it will be cracked. If it is a vital one, then there will be pulpitis and periapical periodontitis, requiring to remove the porcelain tooth.

3. Inappropriate design

Free end bridge porcelain tooth is the inappropriate design that will harm the natural one the most. It will usually cause the fracture of the porcelain bridge. Here I have an example to cite. One has lost his first and second molars, seeking for a porcelain tooth treatment. With the first and second premolars as the attachment, it’s common to see a dangling porcelain bridge after the gum absorption around the first and second molars. Similar to a lever, it will lead to the looseness and even loss of the previous two natural teeth.

Admittedly, the long service life of a porcelain tooth requires an appropriated design, skillful technique and good daily care.
