Secondary Caries

Published on:2018-5-15

What’s secondary caries? It refers to failure of thoroughly removing eroding tissues during the first dental filling procedure, making the repaired tooth suffer from caries again.

There are various causes accounting for occurrences of secondary caries, including spaces between fillings and the surrounding teeth tissues, and aforementioned residual of eroding tissues. In general, secondary caries is hardly detected until it has spread to dental pulp and cause severe pain. In most cases, simple procedure like dental filling won’t be enough to fix it any more. It’s a root canal therapy that will be needed.

With a purpose to prevent secondary caries, you have to mull over both the operations of dental filling and after-procedure oral hygiene. It would be advisable to conduct the filling in a professional dental hospital equipped with experienced dentists as well as advanced instruments. With thorough removal of eroding tissues and application of qualified materials and cements, you are more likely to enjoy an ideal result of dental filling and at lower risks of suffering from secondary caries.

Besides, much attention should also be paid to maintain good oral hygiene. For example, brush teeth at least twice and floss once a day, rinse mouth after every meal and treat yourself to less sugary foods. Most importantly, schedule regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings, to early detect potential problems and get them fixed in time.
