Materials of Dental Filling

Published on:2018-6-2

In the concrete, there are various materials available for dental fillings, including silver amalgam and resin composite. Many people are wondering which one is better. According to dentists from AKJ Dental Hospital, both materials enjoy their own features respectively. So it’s suggested to settle on the one that fits your personal requirements and dental condition the best.

    1.Silver amalgam

Merits: Boasting a good wear resistance, silver amalgam is a kind of inexpensive material with a clinically mature application.

Demerits: It demands a well preparation in shaping the cavity. With an ill-shaped cavity, the filling is liable to fall out following the completion of the procedure, making it unsuitable to fill large defects. In addition, tooth cavities filled with silver amalgam are susceptible to secondary caries. It’s not expected to be applied on anterior teeth as well because of its poor color. Since metal is a potential irritation to gum tissues, a base of other material is required prior to applying silver amalgam in fixing deep cavities. Such demerits account for its declining application currently.

    2.Resin composite

Merits: Close to natural teeth in terms of color, resin composite performs well in aesthetics and is particularly suitable for restoring anterior teeth. It poses a lower requirement in hole shaping thanks to its firm adhesion to teeth and demand on less abrasion. Besides, it works well to prevent secondary caries, making it a satisfactory choice for both adults and children when it comes to filling tooth cavities. With a number of categories available, you are allowed to choose the one that meets your needs.

Demerits: Sadly, some people may be allergic to resin composite. Compared with silver amalgam, resin composite is much more expensive. Take nano-resin as an example, it may cost several thousand in Chinese currency.
