How to deal with receding gums

Published on:2019-1-14

What is receding gums? It means that the height of gums continue to go down due to the long-term existence of dental plaque and calculus. With increasingly less gum tissues to cover and support them, teeth appear longer and even looser.

In fact, such symptoms as “black triangle” and large dental diastemata are the result of progressive gum recession. What’s more, plaque and calculus may find their way to go beneath gums, making it hard for teeth to remain firm in alveolar bone. Without timely intervention, chances are that there will be tooth loosening and even loss in the long run.

The issues seem quite serious. Many people wonder if there is any possibility that the receding gums can grow back. According to dentists from AKJ Dental Hospital, it depends on the severity of the recession. If it’s caused by mild periodontitis, generally the situation can be kept under control after undergoing proper treatment in time. In cases of advanced periodontitis or full-mouth gum recession, however, unfortunately the process is no reversal.

Then what can we do to deal with irreversible gum receding? As for vertical alveolar resorption, a layer of specific film can be put into mouth by surgery to guide the growth of periodontal ligament stem cells. By doing this gums will gradually grow back, but hardly become the same as before. If there are deep periodontal pockets, it’s a surgical procedure called pocket depth reduction that may be required. It refers to removing necrotic granulation tissues and subsequently grafting connecting tissues to make up for that. Because under such circumstance, it’s almost impossible for the alveolar bone to regrow.

The methods mentioned above help to improve the condition to a certain degree, but they can’t restore the gums to it previous height. As is said, prevention plays a more important role than cure. For instance, it’s necessary to carefully carry out brushing practices on a daily basis. Use a soft-brittle brush and adopt the Bass brushing method. Brush teeth for up to 3 minutes every time. Besides, schedule regular dental cleanings and check-ups every year in order to remove tartar which is resistant to brushing. Learn to use dental floss.
