Can Receding Gums Grow back?

Published on:2019-11-28

Most of our behaviors in daily life are done unconsciously or subconsciously. Sometimes these behaviors will damage our health. To give an example, a lot of people with receding gums have no idea of what's going on. They are just wondering why their previously healthy teeth loose off all of a sudden. Now let's read this article to know more about gum recession.

1. What is gum recession?

Gum recession is a symptom of periodontal disease. Periodontitis, as one of the main causes of gingival recession, can lead to lesions of the alveolar bone. When the alveolar bone is resorbed, the attached gums will loosen, resulting in gum recession.

2. Can receding gums be reversed?

Receding gums caused by periodontitis can be stopped after professional treatment, but the already damaged gingival tissues and the receded gums are irreversible. However, even though the gums cannot grow back, treatment is necessary to stop the development of the disease and avoid loosening or falling of the teeth.

3. How to treat gum recession?

(1) Regular dental care

An effective way to delay gum recession is to keep your teeth clean, so regular tooth cleaning is very crucial;

(2) Maintain good oral hygiene

Acquire proper tooth brushing techniques, and use interdental brush or floss to clean between the teeth. Avoid using toothpicks, as long-term use of toothpicks can easily stimulate the recession of the interdental gums;

(3) Regular dental check-ups

Go to see the dentist in a professional dental hospital. Common oral diseases like dental caries and periodontal diseases are chronic diseases with unnoticed early symptoms, which are easily ignored. Regular dental examination is the key to maintaining oral health;

(4) Seek medical treatment as early as possible

If you feel there's abnormal movement of your teeth, you'd better go to the dental hospital for examination in timely manner, and get targeted treatment. Early detection, diagnosis and treatment can avoid aggravation of gum recession.
