Black triangle – more terrible than tooth decay

Published on:2019-11-27

Tooth decay is terrible. But black triangle is even worse.

1. What is black triangle?

The visible black triangle-shaped space between two adjacent teeth which the gums fail to cover is called black triangle.

2. Why are so many people afraid of black triangle?

Most people hate the black triangle because it is unsightly. However, the worst thing about black triangle is that it is not self-healing, instead it gets worse over time. Black triangle can not only catch food, but also facilitate the breeding of bacteria, affecting periodontal health.

3. The causes of black triangle

Long-term clinical observation and studies find the possible causes as follows:

(1) Physiological gingival recession

This is commonly seen in the elderly. Gums will recede slightly with age, but it only causes mild tooth sensitivity;

(2) Periodontitis

In the case of poor oral hygiene, calculus and plaque will accumulate at the gingival edge and between the teeth, constantly irritating the gums, and causing redness, bad breath, loose teeth. The gums will gradually recede and expose the tooth roots;

(3) Dental misalignment

Crowded teeth makes it difficult to remove the materia alba and tartar between teeth, and the long-term gum inflammation so caused will give rise to gum recession. Even though the crowded teeth are straightened by orthodontic treatment, the excessive gap between each two adjacent teeth will be exposed, forming black triangle;

(4) Improper tooth brushing technique

Brushing with too much pressure can irritate the gums and cause gum recession, especially when you get used to moving your toothbrush back and forth. Besides, the improper use of toothpick can also irritate gums and alveolar bone, giving rise to gum recession;

(5) Poorly-made dental prosthesis

A poorly-made removable denture can cause gum recession if its ring clasp constantly stimulates the gums.

4. How to avoid black triangle

(1) All-around dental care

Mostly black triangle is caused by poor oral hygiene in which case the plaque or calculus irritate the gums and make them recede. So maintaining good oral health can effectively reduce the risk of black triangles;

Cleaning the teeth in an all-round way with correct brushing technique, including brushing your teeth at least twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush, avoiding moving your toothbrush in a saw-like motion, and using supplementary dental cleaning tools like interdental brush, oral irrigator, dental floss, etc. can not only reduce the risk of black triangle, but also prevent other oral diseases;

(2) Dental cleaning

Dental cleaning can effectively remove calculus and materia alba. It is better to have your teeth cleaned by the dentist once every six months.
