Published on:2019-7-17

Composite veneers are a type of veneer that are used for repair treatment especially for stained or discolored teeth. However, composite materials have their disadvantages such as durability and staining. So what to do if your composite veneers are stained?

Veneers can be used to repair small areas of damage or discoloration with good results. The choice of veneer materials are usually composite or porcelain and due to the difference in material there is a big difference. One of the biggest disadvantages is that composite veneers are easily stained.

Can Professional Cleaning Remove Stains from Composite Veneers?

So can professional cleaning of composite veneers remove stains? The answer is not necessarily, this will depend on the following circumstances:

1. If the patient has bad oral hygiene and the staining is a result of pigmentation or plaque then a professional scale and polish may be able to improve the problem of the composite veneer stains.

2. If the composite veneers is stained and discolored due to damage or just simply worn down then a scale and polish is not likely to solve the problem. The best option would be to use porcelain veneers instead.

Scale & Polish Cannot Improve all Stained Teeth

A professional scale and polish can remove calculus and plaque, also with the use of dental sandblasting surface stains and pigmentations can be removed. An important thing to note is that a scale and polish cannot whiten teeth it can only clean the teeth and improve overall oral hygiene.

As for staining that has occurred during tooth development stages such as internal tooth discoloration, Tetracycline staining and dental fluorosis a scale and polish cannot remove or improve any staining or discoloration. Therefore, in these cases only whitening treatments and repair can provide better results.
