Tooth decay, also known as dental caries or tooth cavities, can develop among both adults and children. According to relevant report, around 42% of toddlers suffer from tooth decy and nearly 28% of children ranging from aged two to five develop decay on at least one tooth. Thus, much attention should be paid to preventioin as well as treatment to tooth decay.
Prevention
Actually, there are quite a few ways to prevent dental caries for children. Parents are supposed to keep their child stay away from sugary drinks before bedtime, and provide them only with water. Encourage their child to finish milk within a shorter period, instead of sipping it all the time. Following the reduction of teeth exposure to decay-causing sugars, the risks of developing dental caries will go down accordingly. In addition, it’s parents’ duty to help child keep a good oral hygiene on a daily basis, including brushing twice a day with a soft-bristle brush and rinsing their mouth after every meal, especially consumation of sweets.
Treatment
With signs of tooth decay showing up, parents should take their child to a dentist for a checkup and seeking proper treatment in a timely manner. For small cavities, dental fillings are all that needed, while in severe cases, maybe it requires to conduct a full crown or even extraction. To be noted, damaged tooth enamel won’t grow back on its own. If left untreated, the condition will only get worse, which is likely to cast a negative impact on eruptions of their permanent teeth.
