Who Are the Good Candidates for Dental Implants

Published on:2017-1-24

Dental implants are an ideal option for replacing missing or badly diseased teeth. With its comfort and stability, dental implants have revolutionized the replacement of teeth and it is popular day by day. But it is not everyone suitable for dental implant. Good candidates are as follows:

1.Have a jawbone that's reached full growth.

2.Healthy gum and enough jawbones. To receive implants, you need to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant. Because implants fuse to your jawbone, they provide stable support for artificial teeth. Some people who have lost bone in their jaw still can get implants, but first the bone must be rebuilt using special procedures-bone grafting.

3.Have one or more missing teeth but unable or unwilling to wear dentures. For some people, ordinary bridges and dentures are simply not comfortable. Having implant feels more natural than conventional bridges or dentures.

4.A commitment to taking very good care of the implanted teeth and surrounding gums — daily brushing and flossing are critical to the long-term success of dental implants. Regular visits to the dentist for follow-up are also important.

Some people may not be good candidates for implants. They include:

1.Young people whose jawbones is still growing.

2.Pregnant women

3.Alcohol or substance abusers, heavy smokers for example, who are not prepared to follow the dentist's instructions after placement of the implant. They also may be less likely to take good care of their teeth and gums.

4.People who have received high-dose radiation treatment of the head or neck

5.People with chronic diseases or systemic problems, including: Uncontrolled diabetes, connective-tissue diseases, hemophilia, significant immune deficiencies and so on. You still may be a good candidate for implants even if you have one of these conditions. It depends on the extent and severity of the condition.

6.People who take certain medicines, such as steroids or drugs that suppress the immune system

7.People who severely grind or clench their teeth — these habits can place too much pressure on the implants and increase the risk of failure.

If you want to have dental implant, you can go to see your dentist and let him do a completely checkup for you to see whether you are suitable or not for implant.
