The Difference Between One-stage Implantation and Two-stage Implantation

Published on:2017-5-15

The common types of teeth implantation includes one-stage implantation and two-stage implantation. However, patients seldom understand their usage and difference, neither do they know which one is suitable for themselves. So it is necessary for our patients to learn these two types of implantation for making the correct choice.

The Difference Between One-stage Implantation and Two-stage Implantation

Dentist at Shenzhen A.K.J Stomatology Hospital explains these two types of implantation have different structures.

The abutment and the retainer of one stage implantation are connected, while for two stage implantation, are divided into two parts. It is because of their different structures that makes the difference on their effects.

One-stage Implantation

One-stage Implantation is a implantation whose abutment (which is combined with the gum) and retainer (which is combined with bone tissue, also called artificial dental root) connected as a whole part. The implantation surgery can be finished for one time. The retainer is implanted in the bone tissue and the abutment across the gum directly and expose in the oral cavity. Patients can wear temporary denture after taking out the stitches, and remove it after the implants stabilized in 4 to 6 weeks, then the final restoration has been achieved.

Features: only a surgery is needed, but the abutment can be easily affected by the strength from the outside because of its direct exposure in the oral cavity. It’s hard to guarantee the combination of the abutment and the bone tissue in the environment completely without load. Once the abutment is infected, it will directly affect the bone tissue and is bad for the union of implants with bone and gum tissues.

Two-stage implantation

Two-stage implantation is the implantation whose abutment and retainer are divided into two different parts. The implanting of the retainer and the abutment need to be finished after twice surgeries and they are connected by the center screw of the implants. The first surgery is implanting the retainer in the bone tissue and stitching the wound. After combining the retainer and the bone tissue in the environment completely without load in 4 to 6 months, carrying out the second surgery—cutting the gum tissue open, combining the abutment with the retainer by the center screw of the implants. The final restoration can be finished after taking out stitches and temporary denture.

Features: less occurrence of infection, various restoration methods for the temporary denture and various choices for the upper structure. Effect for a long term is better and the success rate is higher than one-stage implantation. The disadvantage is patient should receive twice surgeries.

Tips: One-stage implantation and two-stage implantation are differ from each other on structures and the effects. Patients should make a correct choice as per professional judgment of dentist for reaching the ideal effect. Dentist at Shenzhen A.K.J Stomatology Hospital hold the view that nursing after implantation is equally important. Patients should have to maintain the oral hygiene day and night, receive regular re-treatment for observing late situation of the implants.
