What Causes Periodontitis?

Published on:2018-1-31

Periodontal disease is a kind of common oral disease. There will be bleeding and sore gums when brushing teeth, if you suffer periodontitis. In general, periodontitis is caused by bad habits in daily life. Here, dentists from AKJ Dental are going to introduce the major causes of periodontal diseases, for your better understanding.

There are two major causes. On one hand, dental plaque leads to periodontitis. As for dental plaque, it refers to a collective of microorganisms clinging to teeth surface, which usually cannot be removed by rinsing your mouth. On the other hand, it is dental calculus that is to blame. Without conducting dental cleaning regularly, there will be a large amount of dental calculus which means mineral plaque depositing on teeth surface.

What mentioned above is the two major causes for periodontitis. In reality, many people can hardly tell whether he/she has periodontitis or not, so it’s of great significance to know its clinical manifestations. At the early stage, there will be such symptoms as bleeding gums and bad breath. Besides, a swollen and soft gum margin will be seen as well.

As it deteriorates, there comes the formation of periodontal pockets. Because of the severe damage of periodontal membrane and alveolar absorption, the gum has separated from the tooth root. What’s worse, periodontitis will take a toll on tooth fixation as well, resulting in tooth looseness. In many cases, it is periodontitis that serves as the main culprit for tooth loss.

Being aware of the harm of periodontal diseases, we should practise good oral hygiene on a daily basis, with a purpose to protect our teeth.
