Extracting Wisdom Teeth Hurts?

Published on:2018-4-2

It’s not always the case that wisdom teeth have to be extracted. You can consider leaving alone those with desired eruptions, while an extraction is necessary for an impacted one following the elimination of inflammation. Because it usually press against the adjacent second molar or provoke pericoronitis, with symptoms of swollen gums and bad breath. Will it hurt to extract wisdom teeth?

Generally speaking, anesthesia will be applied prior to the surgery, so as to provide an almost painless process. For inflammatory and impacted wisdom teeth, it’s necessary to eliminate inflammation first with medicines like Metronidazole or Cefradine, otherwise anesthesia may not function that well and there will be a stronger sensation of pain after the surgery.

As anesthetic effect fades, the wound will see slight pain and swelling. Actually whether it hurts or not is linked with the difficulty of surgery. In cases that wisdom teeth erupt strangely, with tooth roots entangling with each other, there are risks of damaging adjacent gums during the extraction. As a result, there may be pain as well as infection. A transfusion therapy should be sought after the surgery, followed by medicine treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics. Besides, you’d better put an ice-bag on that area of face to mitigate facial swelling.

The process of extracting wisdom teeth

1.Rinsing mouth before applying anesthesia

Anesthesia should be injected into areas around wisdom teeth, after rinsing mouth for about 30 seconds with mouthwash for disinfection.

2.Removing the tooth piece by piece

It’d better slice the gums open and then cut the wisdom tooth into pieces before the removal, so as to minimize the wound.

3.Cleaning the extracting socket

Repeatedly clean the socket with normal saline to wash away extra tooth debris.

4.Stitching the socket

Stitches will be required for larger wound but not for smaller one, followed by biting a gauze firmly for about 30 minutes to stop bleeding. There will be forming of a blood clot.

Mostly it takes about half an hour to finish the removal of a wisdom tooth. Ask your dentist to apply anesthesia and ease your mind, and it won’t be that painful.
