Pains Following Tooth Extraction

Published on:2018-5-9

Though tooth extraction is almost painless with application of anesthesia, there is inevitably pain following the procedure, which is known to all. Then, how to well deal with such pain as anesthetic effect fades away?

According to dentists from AKJ Dental Hospital, it’s normal and common to suffer from both pain and swelling after tooth removal. So you don’t need to worry a lot about that. No doubt, the pain and swelling at the first few days after the procedure will be quite severe, generally turning for the better later. Sometimes patients may still feel pain after stitches being removed, in cases that the surgery is hard to operate and a larger wound is left. Under such circumstance, you might as well schedule another checkup to find out if there’s any abnormality.

In general, dentists will prescribe some painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, in line with both the size of wound and patients’ requirements. If the pain is too severe to tolerate, you can take some painkillers for pain alleviation. Otherwise, you can just drop them. As for anti-inflammatory drugs which help speed up the healing process, however, you have to take them without exception. In addition, you can put a ice pack on the according place of your face, with a view to mitigate swelling.

Most importantly, you have to stick with the instructions of your dentist. For example, do not suck or spit; do not touch the wound with your hand or tongue; no brushing within 24 hours; no chewing food on the side of extracted-tooth, etc. Such measures aim to insulate the wound from irritations that will dislodge the forming blood clot and cause bleeding again.
