Should I Take Painkillers after Extraction?

Published on:2018-8-13

In fact, the whole process of tooth extraction will be almost painless except for tiny pain when injecting anesthesia. However, there will be pain after the procedure, especially after removing wisdom teeth. Generally speaking, the pain will disappear within a week as the wound heals. Then can painkillers be taken to settle the pain?

According to dentists from AKJ Dental Hospital, the recovery from a wisdom tooth extraction will be slower, since the operation is more difficult to conduct and will leave a larger wound. As the anesthetic effect fades away, there will be the emergence of pain and swelling, which are normal symptoms after the extraction. Moreover, dentist will also prescribe some painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs in line with your specific case, so you don’t need to worry a lot.

As for whether to take painkillers or not, it’s necessary to follow your dentist’s advice. If the pain is bearable, you can just skip the painkillers. With severe pain, however, you may as well take the prescribed medicines to mitigate the symptoms. Besides, you can put an ice pack on the cheek accordingly within the first 24 hours to ease pain and swelling.

If you’re allergic to certain medicines or have other appeals, you have to tell your dentist the truth in time. Though it’s rare, some patients may need an intravenous drip to mitigate the pain since relevant medicines don’t work well for them. Relevant article: Price of Removing Molars
