Indications of Porcelain Veneer

Published on:2018-9-27

Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells designed to bond over tooth surface, so as to restore both tooth contour and color. Similar to other restorations, porcelains veneer has its own indications. Only those whose conditions meet the indications are allowed to conduct porcelain veneers.

According to dentists from AKJ Dental Hospital, a certain amount, though small, of tooth enamel will be removed in order to hold a veneer in place, which will take a toll on dental health in the long run. Therefore, if there are other options which require no abrasion, you can consider seeking them instead of veneers. Generally speaking, porcelain veneers are indicated for following situations.

    1. Teeth with bad shape or microdontia

    2. Moderate intrinsic tooth discoloration such as tetracycline pigmentation teeth and dental fluorosis

    3. Large diastema (gap) between anterior teeth

    4. One has a normal occlusion but mal-positioned teeth, with no intention to seek orthodontic services.

    5. Genetic yellow teeth

    6. Mild tooth defect, fracture or uneven tooth surface

    7. Mild or moderate non-vital discolored teeth

What listed above is just some common situations. Whether or not porcelain veneers can be applied to your case should be determined following a thorough checkup. In particular, for tooth discoloration and defect, the required restorative way will vary according to its intensity.

As is suggested by dentists, you may as well try laser bleaching to achieve dental whitening ends if it is effective. For tooth deformity, it’s braces that can be considered. When it comes to mild tooth defect, veneers can be sought to fix the problem. However, in cases of severe defect, you may require a crown restoration.  Relevant article: Dental Veneers
