As we all know, a crown of porcelain fused to metal material consists of two parts — external crown made of porcelain and inner crown of metal. If you use such restoration, it’s quite common to confront black gums line after using for a long period. Does it mean that the restoration should be replaced?

But that’s not the only cause for such unpleasant condition. With occurrence of black gums line, you may as well take a thorough dental check-up to nail down the underlying cause and seek proper treatment accordingly. Here comes several potential causes. 

    First, as gums recede, there will be a gap between gums and the porcelain restoration, which will get food debris or bacteria stuck. Over time it’s possible that you will suffer from gingival inflammation and black gums line. In such cases, you have to seek timely periodontal treatment to stop the progress of gums recession. Afterwards, you should always practise correct brushing method, with a view to maintain oral health and take good care of your gums. 

    In cases where black gums line is caused by the material of the crown, you can choose whether or not to replace it with an all-ceramic one which enjoys a better appearance. It’s highly recommended to seek complete porcelain restoration for anterior teeth, for the sake of a more brilliant smile. 

    If the black line results from the inflammation of abutment tooth, then a full test will be required to see whether the crown can be still kept or should be replaced.
