How to Treat Cracked Tooth?

Published on:2018-10-23

Cracked tooth means that there are cracks or fissures, be it small or large, on the tooth, which can be detected by a general check-up. Small cracks may not cast a big impact, while larger ones may result in tooth sensitivity and pain. In severe cases, an extraction may be required.

What causes cracked tooth? Generally speaking, the following situations can be the culprit for it.

1.Frequently bite hard foods such as crabs, ribs and sugarcane, to name just a few.

2.The teeth are often used as a tool, like tearing apart package, opening bottles and biting threads.

3.Accidental injuries or hits will probably lead to cracked tooth as well.

At the very beginning, the cracks may be too small to capture attention. Without timely treatment coupled with bad habits or accidents mentioned above, the cracks will grow larger and deeper over time, exerting a more significant impact.

Are there any ways to deal with cracked tooth?

First of all, a thorough examination should be run to get a confirmed diagnosis. Based on its severity, different kinds of treatment will be applied to fix it.

With timely detection, when the cracks are very shallow and small, mild grinding of dental cusp and occlusal adjustment could be done to improve the condition. Follow-up observations and regular check-ups, however, are required on a long-term basis.

Besides, you can also consult with your dentist to see whether dental filling can be taken or not. Surely, regular check-ups should be scheduled as well, in case that filling material falls off.

When it comes to deeper cracks which have reached dentin and caused tooth sensitivity, you may as well seek crown restoration to protect the tooth as soon as possible.

In severe cases where cracks have gone deep enough to dental nerves, accompanied by inflammation like pulpitis, it’s root canal therapy that will be required prior to wearing a crown.

Even worse, if cracks have extended beneath gums and reached roots, then there are no other options but an extraction. Bear in mind to seek a proper dental prosthesis in a timely manner following a tooth removal.  Relevant article: How to Restore a Broken Incisor?
