Published on:2018-11-8

According to the standard on dental health set by World Health Organization, one should strive to achieve the goal of “eighty-twenty”, which means there are still 20 or more healthy teeth left at one’s eighty.

As we know, old people are more susceptible to tooth loss. Some may face tooth loss at as early as their fifties. Will everyone suffer from such issue at old age? Well, that’s not always the case. Closely linked with one’s dental health, tooth loss can happen to both old and young people.

There are various causes for tooth loss. Most dental issues, such as caries, pulpitis, periapical periodontitis, gingivitis, periodontitis and so forth, won’t turn better by itself if left untreated. Instead, it will only get worse and ultimately lead to tooth loosening or loss. In addition, accidental trauma or injuries are likely to cause tooth loss as well. No doubt, prevention is better than cure. So it’s very important that you schedule regular dental check-ups and always maintain good oral hygiene on a daily basis. For instance, brush teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and before bedtime, and rinse mouth after every meal.

By comparison, foreigners attach more importance to regular dental check-ups which help to early detect potential problems, while Chinese people are more likely to delay treatment. Many of them won’t visit a dentist until the pain is unbearable. Unfortunately, treatment delay will only make things worse. By then, you are set to suffer more and pay more for your lack of awareness on dental care. Relevant article: Harm of tooth loss
