Is it hurt to close diastema by braces?

Published on:2018-12-5

Diastema refers to gap between teeth, which will not only lead to food entrapment on a long-term basis, but also take a toll on appearance. It demands attention and timely treatment. As we know, braces are considered as a good way to close large disastema. But is it hurt?

According to orthodontists from AKJ Dental Hospital, you don’t have to worry a lot about that. There will be mild pain and discomfort during orthodontic procedure, which generally is endurable for both adults and children. However, since the sensitivity to pain varies from person to person, it’s normal that they may react differently.

Within the first few days of putting braces on or after every braces adjustment, there will be a feeling of sour pain and weakness of teeth, because braces are design to apply pressure to shift teeth. Therefore, it’s suggested to eat some soft and fluid food until the symptoms gradually disappear.

Nowadays, there are different kinds of braces available, including traditional metal-wired braces, ceramic brackets, lingual braces and invisible appliance. With the application of external force, the teeth will slowly move and realign themselves, and thus the large gaps will be closed as well. In general, it may take one or two years to complete the procedure. Whenever there is something wrong with your teeth or braces, consult with your orthodontist and have it fixed in time.  Relevant article: How to close teeth gap?

Some may wonder why don’t they seek porcelain crown to close gaps between teeth. It can yield an aesthetic result and can be finished within a shorter period of time. In fact, porcelain crown is not usually recommended, since it required to abrade a layer of tooth enamel upfront. The process of enamel abrasion is irreversible, which will do harm to your dental health in the long run.
