Published on:2018-12-10

Invisalign is a kind of invisible appliance for teeth correction. Featuring in being transparent and light, it is set to yield an aesthetic result. Others can hardly tell that you are wearing an Invisalign braces until they get really close to you. Today it has won recognition and acclaim from both adults and teenagers who need orthodontics.

Invisalign appliances are brackets-free. Instead, it will use some resin accessories that are boned to teeth. The accessories are also transparent and they won’t cut your mouth as brackets do, which makes the orthodontic procedure more comfortable and safer. From the day of putting braces on, you should insist on wearing it for as long as 22 hours every day. Besides, you have to seek an adjustment of the braces in the interval of two weeks. Generally speaking, it takes about one or two years to complete the procedure, which is expected to bring a desirable outcome.

Taking the braces off, however, is not the end of story. There is one last important step — wearing retainers. By no means can we ignore the significance of this small step. Without wearing retainers, chances are that your long-term efforts of teeth straightening before will all go in vain. Therefore, you’d better wear retainers as required, for the sake of maintaining your orthodontic achievement.

Nowadays, there are various kinds of retainer available, such as lingual, traditional and transparent full-arch wraparound retainer. In spite of their differences in material and aesthetics, they all serve the same purpose, that is to maintain the orthodontic result and prevent a relapse. Dentists from AKJ Dental Hospital stress that much attention should be paid to retainer wearing within the first six months of taking off braces. In generally, it’s suggested to wear it both in the daytime and at night. If everything goes as planned, the length of time of retainer wearing can gradually go down.

In most cases, patients are demanded to wear it for one or two years. It’s normal to see tiny difference among different cases, since personal dental condition varies. The exact length of time required will be decided by your orthodontist. Some people who have a poor periodontal condition, for instance, may be asked to wear retainers for a lifetime because their teeth fail to stabilize after the correction. As for teenagers, they may as well wear retainers for as long time as possible since their teeth haven’t reach full growth yet and they may get wisdom teeth later. Even the intermittent wearing like once a week or once a month would be helpful. Relevant article: How to prevent orthodontic relapse?
