How to treat swollen and painful gums?

Published on:2019-2-16

No doubt, there is more than one reason for swollen and painful gums. Here we just list a few commonly seen causes.

    1.Long-term irritation from pungent foods.

2.Poor oral hygiene and accumulation of plaque and calculus, leading to gingivitis or periodontitis.

3.Severe caries resulting in apical infection and abscess will also cause swollen and painful gums.

Then how to treat it? The answer is to seek proper treatment accordingly.

If it’s the result of continuous irritation from foods, it means that some changes on diet must be taken. Efforts should be made to strike a dietary balance. For instance, treat yourselves to less spicy and pungent foods but more light meals. Besides, it’s also important that you rinse mouth, floss or brush teeth after meals.

As for those suffering from gingivitis or periodontitis, a thorough cleaning should be carried out first to remove plaque and tartar attached to teeth. Generally speaking, the condition is set to see improvement following the procedure. In some advanced cases, subgingival scaling may be required.

Should deep cavities and apical infection be the culprit, it’s necessary to fix the cavities in time. By removing caries-causing bacteria and filling the cavities, the symptoms are supposed to gradually turn better.

In some cases where there isn’t enough room for the eruption of wisdom teeth, they may get impacted and squeeze the gums, leading to swollen and painful gums as well. Under such circumstance, you have to take a thorough check-up to get the details about both the position and eruption of wisdom teeth. If they don’t erupt fully in right positions, it’s suggested that you seek an extraction after mitigating the inflammation.

In terms of oral treatment, the fittest way will be the best one. Therefore, whenever there is presence of any dental issues, you’d better consult with a dentist and have the problems fixed as soon as possible.
