How are dental braces fitted?

Published on:2019-12-4

Orthodontic treatment is not foreign to beauty seekers. I guess most of you must have had the intention to straighten your teeth. But have you ever wondered how braces are put on?

Metal braces is an economical and effective treatment option for teeth correction. But how are these small brackets put on the teeth? Below we’ll walk you through the procedure step by step.

Step 1: Polishing the teeth

Before putting the braces on, the orthodontist will polish your teeth;

Step 2: Cleaning the teeth

After polishing, the orthodontist will clean your teeth, followed by acid etching and drying. In this way, metal brackets can be bonded firmly to the cleaned tooth surface;

Step 3: Gluing on the brackets

This step is a big test for the orthodontist, as he/she must ensure zero mistake in the position and direction of the brackets to be put on. The position of each bracket is specifically designed to provide the force necessary to move the tooth. Thus the brackets should be placed in line with the treatment plan;

Imported strong medical glue, non-toxic and safe, is applied in this step.

Step 4: Attaching the archwires

There are two types of archwires, thick and thin ones. The orthodontist uses thin archwires first to offer a gentle force and reduce the discomfort at the early stage, and later change to thick ones in accordance with the dental condition of the patient.

With that, braces has been put on.

The placement of braces is, in no way, an easy work. The position and direction of each bracket are under strict control, with zero tolerance for mistake. This is the due obligation of the orthodontist, for the patient’s sake.

Is that all? Of course not. Dental care during the orthodontic treatment also matters, even though you have picked a professional dental hospital and a professional orthodontist.

Brace wearers cannot brush their teeth vertically, instead they must brush horizontally in these three areas: on the surface of the braces, above the braces, and below the braces.

Maintaining good oral hygiene during the orthodontic treatment is crucial. Failure of doing this may prolong the procedure time, and possibly cause swelling gums, tooth decay or other adverse outcomes.

Brace placement is painless. So you don’t need to worry a lot. Though you may feel a slight soreness at the early stage, it is tolerable, and you will get used to it in a few days.
