Are repetitive tooth fillings bad for kids getting dental caries frequently?

Published on:2019-11-27

Is it bad to have my kid’s teeth filled frequently due to dental caries? If so, what can I do? Some general suggestions would be: keep mouth hygiene, find a skillful dentist, take necessary measures to avoid dental caries, do tooth check-up regularly.

My kid is prone to dental caries, and he has received tooth fillings for several times. Will frequent tooth fillings affect his tooth negatively? Moreover, since tooth tissues may be removed for the placement of the filling, will there be only little teeth left after multiple procedures?

It’s absolutely right to do a tooth filling when kids get dental caries.

After kids get dental caries, no matter on permanent teeth and milk teeth, they need timely tooth fillings. Because when dental caries happens, the tooth will not repair itself, a medical treatment will turn things better. Things will get worse if not treated timely, and the follow-up treatment will cost more and cause more pain.

Repetitive tooth fillings for recurrent dental caries will reduce the amount of tooth tissues because some teeth structure must be removed for the placement of the filling. If the removal is not done properly, cavity-causing bacteria will reproduce and cause another dental caries. Moreover, frequent tooth fillings will add too much pain to kids and cost more time and money. Therefore, it’s advisable to find an experienced dentist.

But we need to find out why kids get dental caries so often.

We need to check if it is caused by the following reasons.

1. Lack of preventive steps like topical fluoridization, and pit and fissure sealing. It stands a high chance to prevent dental caries if one take these preventive steps and do regular dental check-up.

2. Poor oral hygiene. Kids need to do routine mouth cleaning since the eruption of their first tooth. Parents need to offer help, if kids are too young to brush their teeth.

3. Failed tooth fillings. Falling of filling materials and improper removal of bad tooth tissues will cause the recurrence of dental caries.

4. Lack of regular dental check-up. We advise parents to take kids do routine dental check-up that helps prevent, spot and cure dental caries.
