Is Periodontal Splinting Painful for Loose Teeth?

Published on:2019-12-4

The most common cause in adults for loose teeth is from periodontal (gum) disease, trauma and pressure. In such cases the use of dental splints can help by stabilizing the teeth and restore chewing functions of the teeth. How is a dental splint carried out? Is it painful? Does it require enamel removal?

1. How is periodontal splinting treatment carried out?

Periodontal splinting involves  bonding weakened teeth together to form a single unit and attaching them to neighboring teeth. This procedure utilizes bonding material or a dental splint and is often performed on the front teeth. Dental splinting is a non-invasive form of treatment for loose teeth.

There are 2 types of dental splinting which are extracoronal and intracoronal. Extracoronal splinting is a reversible procedure which is usually used for short term needs. The loose teeth are connected with a bonded white composite filling material on the outside of the teeth in some cases a wire, metal plate or Ribbond is used along with the bonded filling material on the outside of the teeth for added support.  Intracoronal methods are also available, in which composite resin restorations can be placed within adjacent teeth and cured to eliminate any interproximal separation.

2. Is periodontal splinting painful?

Periodontal splinting can cause discomfort but generally speaking is not painful. Though different people have different pain thresholds so some patients may experience more pain than others. However, the discomfort should subside over a few days.

3. Is enamel removal required for periodontal splinting?

Periodontal splinting does not require enamel removal.

Tips: If the cause of loose teeth is due to periodontal disease, then other forms of treatment to control periodontal disease is required before periodontal splinting can be considered.
