What Causes Gingivitis?

Published on:2019-11-25

Gingivitis refers to inflammation of the gum tissues, usually resulting from poor oral hygiene. Plaque is the primary cause of gum disease. Smokers or those with a weak immune system are at higher risks of developing gingivitis. Thus, it is advisable to practice good brushing and flossing on a daily basis, schedule regular dental cleaning for removing plaque and calculus, and kick the bad habits like smoking, in order to prevent the development of gingivitis. The symptoms of gingivitis include:

    1. Red, swollen or tender gums

    2. Bleeding gums during and after tooth brushing or flossing

    3. Receding gums

    4. Bad breath (halitosis)

    5. Loose or shifting teeth
