    What’s dental dam? Are there any advantages of using it in dentistry? 



    Actually, a dental dam refers to a thin square sheet, usually latex or nitrile, used in dental procedures to isolate the operate site from the rest of the mouth. For instance, it’s majorly used in endodontic or general restorative treatments, with a purpose to prevent the interference of saliva and reduce risk of infections. 

    To an extent, a rubber dam also serves to protect soft tissues of oral mucosa from sharp instruments and materials, making the treatment process more comfortable for dental patients. It can prevent instruments and materials from being inhaled and swallowed, thereby avoiding various kinds of dental accidents during the treatment. 



    In addition, the use of rubber dam is set to keep the tooth to be treated stand out and improve the visibility of the operative field, helping dentist concentrate more on the treatment without getting distracted. It has to be noted that a focused mind plays an important role in guaranteeing an operative success, especially during the procedure of root canal therapy. 

    Dentists may hold different opinions on whether a rubber dam should be used in dental work or not. However, most of them will apply it in various procedures of prosthetic dentistry.
