Pains after Wearing Braces

Published on:2018-9-15

As we know, pains after wearing braces is no strange to most orthodontic patients. According to dentists from AKJ Dental Hospital, that’s quite normal because your mouth haven’t got used to the braces. Then, how long will the pain last? What is the normal time range for pain duration?

In general, there are two types of pain following the wearing of braces. One is caused by the pressure applied by braces to push teeth movement. The other one results from the wounds on the oral mucosa created by braces.

As for the first type of pain, external force imposed on the teeth by the braces will pull the periodontal membrane and result in a painful sensation which will see mitigation about two to four days after every round of pressure adjustment. For those who are more sensitive to pain, the duration of pain may prolong to more or less a week. Besides, at your first wearing of braces, the pain may continue for a longer period. However, there aren’t any known methods to avoid or control the pain. As you get used to the braces, the condition will turn better gradually. So it’s unnecessary to worry that too much.

With traditionally metal wired braces on, chances are that the wires or brackets will irritate oral mucosa, leading to ulcers and pain. In cases where braces have been put in place, protective wax can be applied to the surface of braces so as to reduce its irritation to membrane. In some very emergency cases, even chewing gum can be used to cover the brackets that are close to the location of ulcers to alleviate pain. If braces are yet to be placed, it’s recommended to choose self-ligating or bracket-less invisible appliance to avoid such problem.

In closing, the pain after braces is inevitable but will disappear as you get used to it. Furthermore, now there is bracket-less invisible appliance available which serves to reduce pain. To be noted, a bracket-less braces will cost more than a traditional wired one. You may as well consult with you orthodontist and choose a proper treatment plan in line with both your dental and financial condition. Relevant article: Invisible Orthodontics
