What is alveolar resorption?

Published on:2018-12-1

As we all know, soil is necessary for the growth of a tree, because it can offer enough nutrient and support to tree roots. What soil to trees is what alveolar bone to tooth roots. Put it simply, alveolar bone are tissues that surround tooth roots.

Normally, tooth roots are completely wrapped by alveolar bone. So the roots won’t exposed and the teeth are able to stay stabilized. Then what’s wrong with your teeth if your dentist say that you are suffering from alveolar resorption and need to seek periodontal treatment?

Alveolar resorption serves as a common symptom of periodontal disease. Without any proper intervention, periodontal disease will develop along the following path: dental plaque — tartar — gingivitis — gum recession and alveolar resorption — tooth loosening. Though there is no pain along with alveolar resorption, it will take a great toll on dental health. Thus, it’s important for you to seek proper treatment in a timely manner when there is alveolar resorption. The resorption is irreversible, but efforts can be made to stop it from deteriorating.

One important way to prevent alveolar resorption is to treat periodontal disease. First of all, cleaning and scaling will be conducted to remove dental calculus and plaque, both above and beneath the gums. Without an ideal result, you may even need a surgery called pocket depth reduction. At the same time, patients have to cooperate and pay more attention to oral hygiene as well. For instance, you have to brush teeth at least twice every day, for up to three minutes every time. Besides, rinsing mouth after every meal, flossing and using mouthwash can also be helpful.

Healthy alveolar bone plays an important role in keeping the long-term stability of teeth and guarantee the success of some kinds of dental work. Generally speaking, you need to take a thorough check-up to know its state before seeking orthodontic or implant service. For those who remain edentulous for a long time, there may be a severe alveolar resorption. So a procedure of bone grafting will be required upfront.  Relevant article: How long will it take to treat periodontitis?
