How to deal with halitosis?

Published on:2019-5-8

Halitosis, also known as bad breath, is a kind of issue that will bring unpleasant and embarrassing experience to sufferers themselves and people around them alike. Practices such as carefully brushing teeth or chewing mint-flavored gum seem to do little help. Are there any other ways to get rid of it permanently?

According to dentists from AKJ Dental Hospital, there may be various causes for bad breath. If it results from the consumption of heavily-flavored food like garlic and onion, you don’t need to worry about it a lot since it will eventually go away in some time. As for long-lasting halitosis, the culprits majorly come from the following aspects.

On one hand, it may be caused by some dental issues. For instance, dental plaque and food debris will interact with each other and harden into tartar over time if you fail to practice excellent oral hygiene. It’s necessary to schedule dental cleaning every six months to remove calculus and plaque. If you are suffering from dental issues including caries, gingivitis and periodontitis, there will also be development of bad breath. You have to seek proper treatment for existing issues, and your breath will smell better accordingly.

For those with dental prosthesis in mouth, if previous restorations are not perfectly fit for them, or they fail to take good care of them, it will probably lead to gums swelling and pain, and cause bad breath. Besides, teeth deformity will form nooks and crannies which are easy to get food debris stuck but hard to get effectively cleaned. In the long run, food debris will get fermented and emit bad odor.

On the other hand, if bad breath continues after well dealing with existing dental issues, some tests should be run to see whether it’s caused by gastrointestinal disease.

In clinical practices, halitosis mostly is linked with dental issues. It’s suggested scheduling regular dental check-ups and cleanings, once in half a year, in a bid to maintain good oral hygiene and health.
