What is normal occlusion?

Published on:2019-12-2

Normal occlusion can help to maintain the beauty and health of our teeth. So today we’ll discuss what kind of occlusion is normal and healthy.

Many people think the upper and lower teeth should be perfectly aligned, and some of them even concern they may have abnormal occlusion. But what is normal occlusion? Let’s view it below.

According to the dentists at Shenzhen AKJ Dental Hospital, normal teeth do not mean the upper teeth being parallel to the lower, instead the upper teeth come over the lower a little bit, like 1-2mm, both horizontally and vertically, which is called normal overbite or overjet. Only in this case, the function and aesthetics of the teeth can be guaranteed.

What are the most common types of malocclusions?

Deep overbite (also known as buck teeth) occurs when the upper front teeth protrude excessively over the lower teeth, or the lower row of teeth bite close to or into the roof of the mouth. It can be treated by moving the upper teeth back.

Another frequently seen malocclusion is underbite, a condition in which the lower teeth and jaw protrude in front of the upper teeth. Underbite requires timely correction.

Besides, edge-to-edge bite can easily wear the teeth, and shorten them over time, so it also belongs to abnormal occlusion which needs timely treatment.

The above three are just a few types of malocclusions. If you want to dig further, there are open bite in which the top front teeth do not overlap the lower, creating a gap between them, malocclusion caused by large gaps between the teeth, midline misalignment, crowded teeth, and jaw deformity, etc. All of these can be correctly told after dental check-up.
